THE NEED:

With over 4000 students and a campus occupies over 150,000 square meters, this university has developed into one of the most important university in biotechnology and electric machinery research since its establishment 80 years ago. One of the 4 colleges of the university, College of Bio-Resources, is having the new campus buildings built for the students and faculty of a total of 7 departments. And as the construction is about to complete, it’s time to deploy network infrastructure for the new buildings.

The two new 8-floor buildings (Building A & Building B) are next to each other and just a few blocks away from the Computer & IT Center, where the servers are centrally located.

THE SOLUTION

Considering the security and performance requirement of this project, ES3526XA V2 is chosen as the L2 switching unit because packed with features and is a cost-effective solution. Featuring 24 10/100 ports and 2 combo Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45/SFP ports, this switch is ideal for wiring closet installations. It brings continuous availability (VLAN tagging, 802.1v Protocol based VLANs) , enhanced security (HTTPS, SSL, TACACS+ 3.0, RADIUS Authentication) and advanced QoS to the network edge, while maintaining simplicity of management.

For the core layer, Edge-Core 4 Slots Layer 3 Chassis Switch, ES4704BD, is selected because of it high performance as well as its simple management and that it’s ideal for the core layer of campus network. This Chassis Switch supports up to 84 Gigabit ports (customer require 48 Gigabit ports), providing flexibility and high port density.

With redundant power supply, fans, and management modules, the Edge-Core ES4704BD ensures continuous operation and is a fully redundant system. Moreover, all parts are hot swappable. They can be added or exchanged without interrupting the whole system. It’s packed with features that best fits the customer’s requirements, including IPv6, RIP 1/2, OSPF, VRRP, IGMP snooping, DVMRP, PIM DM, TACACS+ and Radius authentication.

For this project, there are a total of 45 units of L2 switches (ES3526XA V2), and one L3 Chassis switch (ES4704BD). 20 units of ES3526XA V2 were installed in Building A, as well as 25 units of the same model in Building B. The L3 Chassis Switch is deployed at the B1 floor in Building A and is connected to the server at Computer & IT Center with a Gigabit fiber link.

THE RESULT:

‘While the high performance, scalability and efficiency that Edge-Core solution provides is important, its cost-effectiveness and reliability are the keys to win this project.’ said Charles Chen, Senior Director of Accton Brand Business Unit. ‘The successful deployment is another inspiring case that proves Edge-Core can offer rich featured, reliable solution that address to the needs for customers such as educational or government organizations, and especially for those who pursue high performance solution but have fixed or tight budgets.’
